The reason a perpetual motion machine doesn't exist at this point is because of friction and gravity. These two, if eliminated, could allow for much more efficient machinery. A gasoline-driven vehicle, even, would see an efficiency increase of over 50%.
It would cut down on energy costs, fuel consumption, and wear-and-tear on machined parts. What would be the point of a perpetual motion machine? The very existence of a perpetual motion machine would prove that all we think we know about thermodynamics is wrong. It would require a new theory to be formulated. It would show that all our thinking about the conservation of energy was wrong.
If you could invent a machine that produced enough energy to overcome its own friction, then it isn't really that much more difficult to build one that would produce a bit more energy than it needed. And then you'd have a free source of energy! You'd be a hero! 8^)
