Police Officers: What are the phyiscal fitness requirements to qualify for your department?

What tests do you have to do? What are the standards for those tests? On a side note, is it required to carry a tazer if your department has them?Police Officers: What are the phyiscal fitness requirements to qualify for your department? The ability to run 1 1/2 miles in a certain amount of time - depending on gender and age.

In Mass, they are required to complete the physical challenges of the police academy which includes an agility test, run a mile in a certain amount of time, some weight lifting minimums, push ups, ect.. Its very similar to the physical tests given in military boot camp. On my dad's department they are required to maintain and pass a fitness test every year, including a mile long run, bench press, push ups, and they also are required to take a continuing education test on their knowledge of the laws, and a firearms exam.

In the academy they are required to pass the following areas:

Constitutional Law

Criminal Law

Crisis Intervention/Conflict Resolution

Physical Training

Patrol Procedures

Defensive Driving

Self Defense

Firearm Training

First Responders

Satisfactory score can differ from state to state.

My dad does not carry a tazer, so it is not required in his department, although he does carry military grade pepper spray.Police Officers: What are the phyiscal fitness requirements to qualify for your department? Our department requires a 300 meter sprint in less that 63 seconds, 28 push ups in one minute, 35 sit ups a minute, a vertical jump of 18 1/2 inches, and a 1 1/2 mile run in less than 14 1/2 minutes. If you fail any one task, you fail the entire test.

As far as the taser, you are not mandated to carry it. If we want one, we sign it out at the beginning of our shift.
Alabama Peace Officers Standard of Training (APOST) requires a run of 1 1/2 miles in less than 15.5 minutes. 25 push-ups and 25 sit-ups in less than 90 seconds. and an obstacle course consisting of pushing a vehicle 15 feet, running 50 feet, getting over a 6' fence, run another 50 feet, get through a 2' square window, run another 50 feet, walk a balance beam, and drag a 165 lb. mannequin (I forget how far) in less than 90 seconds. This is the minimum requirements to be admitted to a police academy. Some academies require you to improve these at certain intervals during the academy.

My department will issue Tasers to any certified officer who wants one. It is not required.Police Officers: What are the phyiscal fitness requirements to qualify for your department? In Florida, you have to swim 100 yards with all your clothes on, including shoes. I don't remember if they let you touch the ground or not? It's not easy; at least 30% of people fail this 1st step.

After that, a physical agility test will be administered. This includes an 18 point obstical course and a 1/2 mile run under 8 minutes. Jump your height, trigger pulls, 100 foot car push...Police Officers: What are the phyiscal fitness requirements to qualify for your department?
My agency has a yearly test. You have to run I think the test is a quarter of a mile long. There are different obstacles along the way. A 150 pound rescue dummy to be dragged; climbing a cattle gate; running up steps; dry firing a duty weapon.

Also pushups/setups based on age. In my agency if you were issued a taser and failed to carry it then you would loose it to a long line of willing people wanting a taser. They are very sought after. Also why would you go through the pain of "voluntary" taser exposure not to carry your X-26.
We don't have any formal fitness tests other than a thorugh medical exam and screening. The standard for a lot of WI Departments is what Trooper mentioned.

As for the Taser, we are issued one and a required to carry it at all times.Police Officers: What are the phyiscal fitness requirements to qualify for your department?
In NC, to obtain Basic Law Enforcement Certification, you have to pass the POPAT (Police Officer Physical Assessment Test.) It is a timed physical agility test that includes things like push-ups(40), sit-ups(40), running (600yd), and dragging a body/dummy fifty feet. You have seven minutes and twenty seconds to complete the test. It's required to obtain your certification, and most departments here require you to complete one prior to being hired. They are aiming to make it a yearly requirement to maintain your certification. I support this wholeheartedly. We need more physically fit officers out there.

We are not required to carry tasers at my department, but we have access to them. I always carry one while on duty because I prefer to be as armed as possible. They are excellent less than lethal tools for cops, and I imagine you won't find a lot of officers that wouldn't like to carry one if they could.
They have to be able to eat a dozen donuts a shift. LOL.
