Optimal number of weight lifting sets for fitness?

I read recently that the vast majority of benefits in weight lifting, given a goal of fitness vs. building size, is in the first set. In other words, doing two to three sets of a given exercise offers little additional benefit than doing only one.

What is the general consensus regarding this finding?Optimal number of weight lifting sets for fitness?I don't know where this information came from, but any strength training program that I have ever seen documented somewhere lists reps and sets. Never have I seen the number of sets be 1! In addition, whenever I do 2-3 sets, my last set will be to maxout...doing as many as possible and working past the burn/fatigue. I don't see how you could results any other way.
