No you don't have to be fit and in good condition to join but you do have to be fit and in good condition to go to boot camp.

Most people who join today won't leave for boot camp until Nov-Mar 2009 at least with us in Cleveland. I'm a navy recruiter. Our job while your in the delayed entry program is to make sure you are fit and mentally ready for boot camp.

I am in the DEP program for the Navy. I am a 19 year old boy and am required to do 50 pushups ( two minutes), 60 situps (two minutes), and run a mile and a half in 11:30. This is what my recruiters say is passing.
